Marbella
Marbella is a stylish, cosmopolitan resort that has long attracted the rich and famous, alongside thousands of ordinary holidaymakers seduced by its beautiful landscaping and unspoilt hidden corners. A sun drenched historic town, it is blessed with an especially mild microclimate, thanks to the protection of the impressive Sierra Blanca mountain range, which rises majestically behind Marbella just one mile inland from the shore. Surrounded by luxuriant semitropical vegetation, bathed by the waters of the Mediterranean, cooled by sea and mountain breezes, Marbella has a very special feel.
 Along with the long sandy beach its main focus is the Old Town (the Casco Antiguo) where the bougainvillaea covers the whitewashed buildings in dazzling colour. Most of the Old Town has remained almost unchanged since the 16th century and owes much of it's character to the Moors. Well worth visiting is The Castle, these ruins are found in the historic centre of the town, near Orange Square and are the only ones from the Muslim era which have been preserved. During the Muslim occupation, Marbella was one of the most important cities in the province of Malaga.
The Plaza de Los Naranjos (Orange Square) is recommended for some Old Marbella atmosphere - the plaza is lined with stately buildings, small shops, art galleries, bars and bistros and is a hub of activity day and night. Depending on the time of year, of course, the colours here are truly dramatic and vibrant with the trees and exotic tropical plants set against a backdrop of dazzling white buildings and a deep blue sky. Avenida Ricardo Soriano, a major thoroughfare through Marbella, is fronted by designer boutiques and is the centre of modern Marbella.
